columbus DIY is raging hard into the summertime now. the basements are steamy and the shows are many. every band is on tour this summer and columbus happens to be one of the treasured staples of tour. bedford - crappy xmas tape

happy holidays!

here we have a rare treat from northeast PA's most favourite pop-punk band during the mid to late 90s, bedford. i'm not sure exactly what year this came out, but i'm thinking 1998 or 1999, and as far as i know, the songs were recorded for a tape to be given away at one show around the holidays. despite this ultra-limited cassette release, a year or so later, there was an even shorter run of the same songs on CD-R format.

bedford pull out all the stops on this lo-fi stocking stuffer. if you're not familiar with bedford's brand of punky rock, imagine taking that old record reviewer's blender and inserting equal parts elvis (fat AND skinny, but mostly skinny), elvis (costello, this time), buddy holly, husker du, action patrol, and doc hopper, blend until smooth, and there you've got a close approximation to the bedfords, as they were sometimes affectionately known.

the internet rules: three shades of dirty and higher giant myspaces, nuisance demo

long time coming, there is now an official unofficial three shades of dirty myspace page. this short-lived band from MD rose from the ashes of emo-punk pioneers the hated, and produced one of the most rocking/melodic/beautiful demo tapes i have ever heard! you may remember, i shared the "paper roses" EP/demo with you a while back on my blog here.

might be a little behind on this news, but i just found out ernie from token entry, in your face, black train jack, grey area, etc. is in a new band called higher giant. check out their myspace page. melodic hardcore in the vein of, well, everything you thought it'd be! great stuff!

our good friend justin over at mustard relics posted nuisance's "attractive nuisance" EP tape. i first checked out nuisance when their "confusion hill" LP was released on lookout records. the lookout! roster at the time was damn near solid and i was pretty rabid for new music so i picked up the LP as soon as i could. unfortunately, i wasn't entirely impressed with it for some reason and it was quickly shelved after a few listens. i didn't "get it." something always drew me back, though. there were a few undeniable hooks buried within the plodding, stoney rock storm. it took years, but when i finally caught on, it was like i discovered a brand new record. one that sounded great after repeated listens, on roadtrips, and in the kitchen. riffs that slayed nirvana, and hooks that only jawbreaker can better. "confusion hill" was now a completely different monster to me. one that i was now proud of to have somehow cracked the code, which in turn, led directly to my new pursuit of all things nuisance. over the years, i have picked up most of the vinyl for a song, while traveling around the states (save for the sunny-side down lp, if you have a copy to spare, holla!).
this demo is bonafide nuisance in infancy. great to hear this band in early stages!

visions of change - my minds eye LP

visions of change are not a band you hear about very often, which is a terrible shame. i discovered this band partly by accident, partly by intuition. you know the kind of game you play when browsing for records: filter through all the common crap, all the uncommon crap that you know isn't interesting. then something catches your eye, perhaps it's the name of a band that you read about years before in the puszone, or MRR, or some other review. maybe it's the artwork that sticks out, or a band name that piques your interest. in this case it was a combination of the artwork on their first album along with the name of the band that struck a chord somewhere inside of me. it also helped that the band were british. luckily, i was shopping at jerry's records in squirrel hill, pittsburgh, where they have a few turntable listening stations set up to try before you buy. the insert had a few good visual cues, too, but it was when the needle dropped that i was quickly sold.

visions of change played (active throughout the late 80s, as far as i know) a solid mix of melodic hardcore with a bit of a paisley bent (perhaps it's the hammond organ!). i was going to write that they are maybe comparable to snuff, or later-era government issue and seven seconds, but this band really had their own sound going on drawing equal influence from the hardcore of the time, punk, and the soul/garage sounds of the 60s. the band actually released a few records under the name "the depraved" before deciding to propel out of a stagnant HC scene, changing the name and taking the music in a little different direction. the depraved albums are also brilliant and are worth tracking down if you like this. my mind's eye is their second of two albums, i do believe. not sure of any other records that may have released.

AG Aloe - self-titled EP - hyper-frenzied japanese punk rock

AG Aloe are another one of those bands that the internet provides nothing but a black hole inside of another black hole when digging around for information. i've had this intense little platter since it came out in '96 or '97, purchased from the all-mighty vacuum mailorder (RIP). if you're not familiar, vacuum was probably the best mailorder for hardcore/punk back in the mid-to-late 90s. not only did they have a large selection finely tuned to my very tastes, but they also were very VERY timely with shipment. sometimes you wondered how it was possible to have received your order so quickly. i could place an order (this is snail mail, mind you) on a monday, and have goods in hand, along with an updated catalogue, by thursday!! i'm sure you could understand the addiction this quickly caused.

i first heard this wild EP when i was DJing at KDVS in davis, ca. DJ rick had a show which showcased tons of amazing punk and hardcore, new and old, from all over the world. i became a devoted listener. i would often make entire orders of records i'd heard on his show, many of which he announced getting from said mailorder. the day i heard the needle drop on this, i knew i had to have a copy. the band played with the speed and ferocity of fingerprint, yet had the pop sensibilities and wackiness of say, action patrol. the description in the nat records ad included inside the 7 inch says "funny & melodic HC a la flag of democracy from osaka." nat records, out of osaka was the label that put it out.

i do not have any further information about this band, other than this EP exists, and it rules. if anyone has any further infos, i would love to hear about it! enjoy!

THE FEST 7: total recap

A few weeks ago, i hopped in the van with local pop-punk stalwarts, delay, for a short tour down to the fest 7, something i'd been looking forward to since last year's fest. Not only did we have three shows booked on our way down: cincinnati, lexington, and birmingham, but we also had to scrap the old delay van in kentucky, which broke down there the week before and was parked on the front lawn of a friend's house. Since we didn't have delay's van anymore, our mode of transportation was provided by two young members of a new cleveland band called reverse the curse, who were driving down to the fest in their conversion van anyhow. the three shows on the way down were fun, and we ended up staying with some of the nicest people imaginable. it's always nice and reassuring to travel and experience other like-minded DIY communities many miles away from the microcosmic one in which you actively participate. so glad i never got jaded, which is almost the norm these days to be jaded and/or burnt out by 23. i mean today, in the advent of the internet, even being a jaded TEEN isn't all too uncommon.

we drove through the night after our birmingham show and arrived ass-early to gainesville. much too early to call my buddies matt or chris, from young livers, with whom i made arrangements to stay. since everyone else i was with were staying with chris from plan-it-x, i copped a slice of floor on the old schoolbus stationed on the side of their house and had some strange dreams for a few hours before waking up to excited conversations and a buzz of activity just outside the bus in the backyard. some people were just crawling out of tents, and others were sitting around the yard discussing their plan of attack for the day. i wasn't hearing any of it because i was about to make a bee line for some coffee before meeting up with the delay boys for check-in, acquiring the all-mighty WRISTBAND!! you know, the sort of all-access pass necessary for the weekend's festivities. it wasn't long before i was running into friends left and right, and things would heat up faster than you could say, "GAME ON!"

here's the roster of bands i caught during the next three days:

day 1 - oct. 31:

virgins, ringers, good luck, serious geniuses, cheeky, screaming females, bouncing souls, paint it black

there was absolutely no easing into it. when i said, "GAME ON!" i meant it!! the fest was well underway with virgins sweating it out at common grounds. i had heard great things about this band, which led me to believe they were right up my alley, as far as pop bands go, and my hunch was pretty spot on. they were described to me as sounding a lot like ALL, which they kind of did, newer ALL, that is. screaming females KILLED IT! bouncing souls were old friends from back in the day, i roadied two US tours for them in the early 90s, so it was awesome to catch up with them briefly and watch them play from backstage. they played only songs from the first two records, and it brought back so many great memories. after the souls finished, they announced that immediately across the street from the venue, paint it black were going to play a renegade show in the parking lot. i raced over there to a large group of kids surrounding a uhaul truck in which paint it black were playing inside. people were stage diving off the top of the uhaul. police arrived in no time at all shutting down the guerrilla punx show, and the air smelled thick of riot, but for the life of me i couldn't get my camera to switch on. it's six years old now, has over 10,000 photos taken with it, and gives me errors most of the time.

day 2 - nov. 1:

the measure [sa], new bruises, north lincoln, armalite, too many daves, bridge and tunnel, fiya, new mexican disaster squad, young livers, the emotron

spent most of the day watching bands at common grounds and helping out with the new bruises/kiss of death merch table. funny how i can't escape it, huh? haha!! i absolutely love watching the measure, especially now that fid moved from drums to guitar. he's such a wild axeman!! new bruises were awesome/hilarious. bryon shaved his beard into a biker/thrash stache and verbally accosted all the political punks in the crowd. how come i was the last person on this punk planet to find out about armalite?? atom from fracture (yeah, and that package thing too, i guess), mike mckee of kill the man who questions fame, dan yemen of lifetime, and a drummer who was probably in another band before this too, all playing no idea-style punk. it wasn't disappointing, yet it wasn't so much the sum of it's parts, either. bridge and tunnel FLOORED ME! never heard them before this, and apparently they'd played columbus a few times recently. completely off my radar. 90s-styled emo-core played with the rawest, most sincere energy and passion i've seen in a while. definitely a fest highlight for me! young livers packed the place out, and rightfully so. they capped the night off with a powerful set of their own brand of tuneful/gruff punk. after the show ended, the house parties began and rumours spread of which bands were playing where. i followed the directions to the place where a supposed replacements cover band was to play a living room. after somehow ending up at wrong house parties twice, i had found the one for which i was looking. i think i was there for five minutes when i witnessed a guy fall to the ground, rub dirt all over his face, and start slithering through the crowd on his stomach like a snake. soon after, i squeezed into the living room and the music started. it was not replacements covers. it was alright though, so i stuck around. the replacements cover band were to play next, and the house was no longer letting anyone else in! i lucked out, and waited. the band set up, anticipation was thick in the air. sam from bitchin' was on lead guitar and vocals and started off with a solo rendition of "if only you were lonely" to which everyone swayed and sang along to, while the rest of the band dealt with equipment. during this time, the police arrived and stopped the show. the only way it could continue, it seemed, was if it were played acoustically, which they refused to do. some people made phonecalls to see if it could be moved elsewhere, but to no avail. they actually played the next night at wayward, but the place was already past capacity when i arrived. total bummer!!

day 3 - nov. 2:

the shaking hands, off with their heads, toys that kill, the ergs, the ergs, leatherface

the shaking hands were the first band chris and matt joined before starting young livers, when they moved to gainesville a few years back, and were initially called the horror. it had been a few years since i'd seen them play, and they sounded really good. hope they make their way back to columbus sometime for a show, all great guys. a blast to hang out with. the ergs dropped two sets, playing everything including a descendents cover. leatherface took the stage and what a great time it was! frankie stubbs is my daddy!! they played all of the classics including "peasant in paradise," "springtime," and "i want the moon," along with all the best of the newer material. i was stoked beyond belief!! an incredible set to close out fest 7.

fest: it's more like punk rock family reunion than anything. i could go down there without any intentions of seeing any bands at all and still have a blast just hanging out. it ruled completely!

some other things that ruled: rites of spring and gray matter t-shirts from the distro @ wayward council, jamaican tempeh e'ryday from reggae shack, espresso from volta too many times, vegan brunch from the top (though they had a fest crisis and we waited TWO HOURS for our food), that cuban joint on the corner i had lentils and rice and root beer.

thanx to all friends old and new who made my trip so awesome!! delay for taking me and letting be be their roadie for wristband, reverse the curse for being cool dudes and letting me ride with, chris (plan-it-x) for letting us crash there and being a great host to many, many folks, matt and chris (young livers) for letting me sleep on their floor, bryon (new bruises/kiss of death records) for hanging out all weekend in between juggling gear and merch AND for the ride to tampa (holy shit, the TACO BUS RULED!!), and especially to Cat for taking the time and road tripping with me back to ohio in her vehicle.

after a bit of musical chairs for a last-minute space for cola freaks to play, we ended up adding them to a monster house show after broke as a joke canceled an hour before the show was to begin at the legion of doom. even already with five bands, the monster house show actually worked out really well. each of the other bands were really good and the entire evening kept with an extremely positive vibe. cola freaks capped off the evening and melted minds. my favourite of the other bands were called forever, and sort of had a tilt meets x kind of sound. plus, they ended their set with a cover of academy fight song by mission of burma, which was really nice to hear.

pierced arrows @ beachland tavern, cleveland oh 10.13.08

took a short roadtrip to cleveland this week to see pierced arrows play at the beachland tavern. the more than two hour ride wasn't nearly as annoying as it usually could be, although i didn't have to drive so that part was really awesome. upon arriving, we were met with two unexpected carloads of friends from pittsburgh, and shortly thereafter, another carload from columbus. the sad part was, that together, our formed voltron of rock-hungry punks outnumbered the locals present for the show. it didn't matter though, after anxiously waiting through two opening bands, pierced arrows still played with the ferocity and fervor of a packed ampitheater. i was seriously floored by the performance. i couldn't help but even be somewhat intimidated knowing the long rock legacy of toody and fred cole, despite how amazingly humble and personable these souls completely are. for more info on said legacy, check out the unknown passage: the dead moon story DVD. i picked one up after the show, and can't wait to crack into it.

what a completely fun show. i'm really into three-band shows. anything more these days it seems, exceeds my hardcore attention span. bill bondsmen opened up with some gritty, raging hc, but these guys seemed maybe a little too light-hearted coming from blown-out detroit, perhaps they're not from detroit proper. regardless, they put down some solid riffage that set the tone for the remainder of the evening. dean dirg, all the way from germany, followed up with theirshort blasts of intense and catchy hardcore punk, complete with chanty choruses. their live performance did not disappoint in the least. they sounded pretty amazing, super tight, and somehow very close to their records. maybe they recorded them live in a basement?! their setlist resembled a groceries receipt, some 25-30 songs long, and they just plowed right on through it flawlessly. heath deadger capped off the night with an unexpected tremendous debut. born out of the bandluck band lottery earlier this year, they were pretty much the only ones to persevere the consequences. not sure what happened to any of the other bands from the bandluck lottery, but HD certainly nailed it for what it's worth. mickey pulls of growling vox, fronting this skate-thrash hc unit with ease. also to their credit, starting a band in this style of music without all of the flip-cap-bandanna posturings is a very welcome gesture in my book. kudos to a new band for columbus that seems quite promising. let's hear a demo soon, heath deadger!

pancreatectomie opened the show with a killer set of disgusting medical/gore grind rounded out with a few (maybe too short) mosh parts, too bad it was their last show for a while. demo and other releases coming soon! nightfall were up next and fucking set the tank on steamroller. ripping three piece dis-crust, all three members also of dissystema, who (+1) were up next and thrashed through a similar set of epic metallic crust. nukkehammer closed the show with their scandi-bulldoze style of hardcore.

nukkehammer recorded a face-melter of a demo, which will be released on cassette sometime soon. in the meantime, get your fix in the mp3 format here.

been a bit of a nostalgia trip going on over at the columbus sucks message board, old columbus flyers are the topic of one of the most popular threads right now and there are some pretty good ones being posted. lots of old legion of doom flyers, as well as flyers for shows at addition 13, fire exit, and elsewhere. the lot of which corresponded with a few cassette rips i'd recently done of a bunch of demos i've been wanting to listen to, and as your luck would have it, posted here for your listening pleasure as well.

first up, we have the xAND WE REMAINx demo. straightedge youth crew thrash-core featuring past/future/present members of killed in action, dismal, reflect, the ordeal, the dead hate the living, severe, etc. i think they were still all straightedge at this point. which still remain? haha.

last, but certainly not least, we have the almighty deathly fighter demo. maybe even better than 9 shocks terror, this japanese hardcore-influenced band pulled out all the stops, and with surgical precision. GISM were given their due run for the money. deathly fighter are kind of still a band, mostly in name only, but are totally different and do not sound like this anymore. christian who provided vocals for this outfit, currently carries the banner with his latest abomination to humanity, vile gash.

here's one i uploaded for a friend and decided to post since it's already upped. i haven't been able to find any infos on this band, but i know i do have at least one other 7", maybe two. the CD was released on crisis records, which, to my knowledge, was a short-lived subsidiary of revelation. i think i bought this because it was the same label that put out the first farside 7", which i was really into. this release doesn't fall far from that type of sound, either. very melodic rock-ish type stuff. if you're a fan of bay area punk from the early 90s (samiam/jawbreaker) or minneapolis in the 80s (soul asylum/husker du), i think you'll dig this. if anyone has any more information, it would be greatly appreciated!!

an historical document in it's own right, a hardcore demo from a band in hazleton, pa back in 1992. i always wondered what type of underground music happened there before this era, if any. i mean there had to be something, right? i completely remember seeing alleyway graffiti there when i was just a wee lad that read PUNK OUT! in red spraypaint on a white wall just behind the main street downtown. years later when i was a skaterat punker, i would sometimes see this mob of older goth punks that used to hang out, but i was too shy to talk to them.

we always used to laugh about how hazleton was 20 years behind the times with everything, and if hardcore began in 1982, then i would say that this demo from 1992 was way ahead of it's time!! pioneers of mob city hardcore? who knows. i was friends with all the kids in this band, was there when they recorded this demo at the unisound in reading, pa, and always helped drive equipment to the shows. i'm not sure if the band even lasted more than a summer. i only remember there being less than a handful of shows and then the band was no more. such was the fate of most NEPA hc/punk bands from back in the day.

i think there was a big oi! influence in this band, especially with the more melodic edge and gruff vocals. i think the bruisers were a favourite at the time. for what it's worth, hardcore existed in hazleton, pa in 1992. this is a document.

i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this tape might very well be THE holy grail wilkes-barre, pa hardcore demo. option (usually along with sideover) played support to just about every major name in hardcore that came through the area during the early to mid 90s, and ventured out of town on occasion as well. option could headline a bill of all locals and there would be 2-300 kids there, all singing along!! these songs were staples in their super-energetic live set, the choruses often inducing large dog-piles of kids with backwards baseball caps. wilkes-barre has a pretty rich history of hardcore, DIY shows at firehalls, kids doing fanzines, etc. and where most bands and spots were flashes in the pan, option were there through the thick of it, and really deserve their due. or at least an MVP award for keeping the scene alive all those years.

the inspiration for this post came from EMS's COREGASM blog, where i was delighted to find the option demo that came out in 1993. a tape which i had never actually owned a copy. thanx, eric!

two canadian bands shredded the legion of doom last nite, born bad and search and destroy. born bad stealing the show with their intensely raw energy. both bands sharing most members and other bands' equipment. reflect also debuted some new material, and there are talks of a new demo coming up. long overdue, but better late than never. i'm pretty excited about it. vegetative state opened up the show with their youthful brand of spazzo weirdcore, hope they'll play more legion shows sometime soon!!

the columbus music scene is usually most notable for all of the hip lo-fi kinda bands that become popular for a minute or two, and yeah they are well-deserving. often overlooked is the columbus metal scene. there are always a solid few top-shelf metal bands melting eardrums from basement to stage, here in columbus. two of which, deadsea and locusta, played legion of doom with louisiana swamp doom rockers, thou. locusta impress more each time i see them, and opening this show was no exception. thou doomed up a storm in the tradition of soylent green, eyehategod, iron monkey, etc. punishing blows to the frontal lobe!! last, but certainly not least, deadsea melted the walls of the legion with their tasteful brand of avant-prog-metal. this band could very well be comprised of the most talented, positive, and nicest people on this planet.

nah, actually, it worked out really well, aside from a few bewildered faces. i think it should happen more often. weed steeler are still up to old tricks, even with the new lineup stunts, still worth seeing every time. vile gash thrashed through their usual 5-min-or-so set. empire juggled members of triceratops yet again, this time going for a no-bullshit-all-bust hc approach. kind of a re-take on the triceratops sound, minus the party. i miss the party. BRING BACK THE PARTY!!

okay kids, last of the photo fucking posts for now. i promise, i just had to get caught up here and i know how much you love reading my blog. my stats graph resembles mount kilmanjaro or some shit. i get more hits than a wheelchair's got seats!! i'm full of 'em, i'll be here all week, i tell ya!

anyhow, last nite i pedaled a few blocks over to the 15th house to check out a few bands from athens, ga. could very well have been chattanooga bands if you asked me. not bad in that sloppy-punk-cuz-i'm-drunk-but-fuck-it-it's-DIY kinda way. the bands were bold slug and hot new mexicans. there was an opener that i missed and didn't catch the name, and of course, then there was delay. you can somehow count on delay to always deliver the goods. how can you not when these kids are as positive as they are. i only wish i knew the words to all their songs like all of their other fans do.

local shredding heroes, black dove, brought their tour with france's own d-beat dis-dudes, gasmask terror, to the 15th house. i arrived just in time to catch a gander at gasmask terror and then all of black dove's set. didn't get there early enough to secure a spot up front, so unfortunately i do not have any flicks of gasmask terror. i know, i know - BOO HOO!! gasmask terror were pretty much what you would expect, ripping d-beat, and then black dove delivered the brutality, fo sho!!!

i was lucky enough to be in attendance at the harvey milk show, and it was probably THE face-melter of SXSW 2008. loud and on point, i was instantly blown away. the addition of joe preston to the fold was a big bonus, makes complete sense. they were so loud, that i had to run inside to ask the bartender for earplugs. after politely declining a super bullshit offer to sell his personal earplugs for ten dollars, i hit the restroom and shoved a few wads of toilet paper into my ear canals and happily made my way back to headbang position at the front of the stage.

i especially enjoyed the footage on early 90s DIY washington, DC record label, simple machines. very inspiring!!

here's a video from a band i was lucky enough to see a few times during sxsw. the band is called HEALTH, and hail from los angeles, california. their performances are a sonic assault combining elements of guitar noise, stabs of feedback, desperate chanting, and wild, tribal drumbeats. this video was apparently shot using the built-in isight cams on thirteen different macbook pro laptops. pretty cool idea.

two weeks with no updates pretty much means i have been away from the computer and out on the road racking up the miles again. check out the photos from my latest tour with genghis tron. it was a two-week stint throughout the midwest, down to sxsw in austin, texas, and back up again through the midwest that ended in an accident losing a tire on the freeway, losing control of the van, spinning out, and jackknifing the trailer, ultimately sliding backwards and sideways into the muddy median. luckily, the five of us walked away without as much as a scratch, our van and trailer, however, are currently in the shop for repairs and it seems that it won't be ready for our next month-long tour which starts next week.

as well as our accident, we also endured a blizzard in oberlin, ohio, having to stay there an extra day and cancel a show in bowling green, the roads were so bad. once we made it out of the midwest, the sun shone brightly and our five days in austin couldn't have been nicer!! temperatures were well into the 80s, and i walked blisters into parts of my feet i never even knew existed. along with the blisters, i also had a swollen toe/ingrown toenail combo (delicious i know, right?) that made being on my feet a fucking charm, let me tell you.

a bunch of our shows on the way down to texas were with clouds, who happened to be a great band and awesome tourmates. i look forward to seeing them again in the future!! we played a few shows with some of my best friends in the world, an albatross, which was awesome to hang out with and see them play, but weird not to be on tour with them. they were playing a bunch of shows with apes, who are also stellar! our loop back through the midwest was accompanied by louisville's finest, coliseum. while there are many reasons to love this band, i will go on record to say that they've got the most insane drummer i'd ever seen, who is probably one of the funniest cats i'd ever met. this guy is wacky hi-jinx personified!! powerhouse of a band, check 'em out!!

procuring my blisters at sxsw in austin, i'd have to say, was well worth it. among some of the amazing bands i got to see were clip'd beaks, health, mika miko, monotonix, knyfe hyts, harvey milk, and many more. too many to name!! i ran into dozens of friends and acquaintances, and finally got to meet up with joeymonster for a trip to veggie heaven for a tasty vegan meal. he even bought me the god damn shirt!! thanx joey!!

i bought this tape from one of the members of the band when i was on tour with a band called deckard (more about this band soon), back in 1995. i believe it was this same tour that we met up with a band called hot water music, and procured their "push for coin" demo. it would be this demo, along with discount's "mom lied to me" that became the soundtrack for the rest of tour, putting it on most times for repeated listens, until one day the deck in the van decided that it, too, needed some breakfast. sad to say that the only thing on the menu was hot water music "push for coin" omelet. unfortunate as it was, i am glad the discount tape survived the devious game of russian roulette.

to me, sun god are the surprise best new band of the year. i think they'd sound right at home on SST or homestead records in the mid-80s, reminding me of many of my favourite bands of that era, husker du, dinosaur jr., and squirrel bait. they also had the rockin' vibe of bands like doc hopper, sinkhole, and even the doughboys. not a popular style to play these days, but one that i really enjoy!! many kudos to sun god!!

kudos also to vile gash for going above and beyond all expectations for their first show, and to reflect for always being awesome!! i have no doubts that the midwest scene right now is surely a heavyweight contender.

yeah, so strawman called it quits after returning from an european tour, leaving jimmy to form shotwell coho with aaron cometbus, and open up for sublime and strung out at their first show in december of 1994. since then, shotwell has seen numerous lineup changes, including the departure of aaron cometbus on drums. in one form or another, shotwell could be seen over the years, touring the nation in their leprechaun mobile home, or taking the streets back by setting up and playing guerrilla punk rock shows in the streets of the mission. it seems to me that shotwell are one of those bands who LIVE the chaos!!

i'm pretty sure i got this tape when they played cafe metropolis, in wilkes-barre, pa, perhaps in the late 90s. however, i also saw them once a few years prior to that, at the teen center/3rd + b st., in davis, ca.

in keeping with the theme today of early 90s northern california bands, here's a demo from the bay area's wynona riders. this demo goes back to the days of tape trading through snail mail (ha! remember that!?). unfortunately though, it was obtained from a hasty trader who couldn't be bothered with copying inserts or even writing track lists. yet, it is still worthy of a post here, since this band was one of my favourites from the bay area lookout records pop-punk onslaught of the early nineties. the wynona riders were formed from members of a couple of other notable bands such as the soup, filth, vagrants, pot valiant, and sweet baby.

i believe this is the demo mentioned in their following bio from lookout records:
I encountered THE WYNONA RIDERS first at a Sunday afternoon show at Gilman Street with a dozen or so other people. I was still new enough that I jumped at any chance to hang out at the graffiti-coated club and be bombarded by any manner of punk rock allowed to mount the stage. Sunday afternoon shows were musical pot lucks: they seemed to book bands that pestered the staff for so long they had to be given a show—my own first band was one of them. They were almost always all local bands that I'd never heard of, but it was fun to just hang around, and if the band sucked you could talk outside on the sidewalk. When THE WYNONA RIDERS started playing, I looked up from whatever conversation I was engaged in. They sounded good, the songs were melodic and catchy, and they seemed well-practiced, unlike the other bands they were appearing with that day. Pat and I were putting together The Can of Pork Compilation, and I asked the vocalist, Skip, who later ran for mayor of Alameda, CA, if they wanted to contribute a song. He gave me their demo tape, with which I became preoccupied. Their music was even more infectious on further listenings, and the lyrics were cryptic, humorous poetry—or at least, I hoped they were because they made me laugh. THE RIDERS went through some lineup changes and two East Bay band veterans and scenesters, Richie Bucher (SOUP, SWEET BABY) and Dave E.C. (FILTH, THE VAGRANTS) ended up in the band. Lookout! released a 7"EP, then recorded demos for an LP when the band broke up, all in 1992. Then in 1995, THE WYNONA RIDERS reformed in response to the resurgence of '92 era melodic pop-punk. The time seemed perfect. After two ambitious and arresting releases, THE WYNONA RIDERS broke up again over the question of whether to internet or internot. Skip and '95 era guitarist Joe Selby went on to form the short-lived but still great TOYBOAT.—Christopher Appelgren

After a successful tour that saw the Wynona Riders play over 40 shows around the country in six weeks the band decided to try to stick it out with the touring line-up and began writing new material for a follow-up record. An interim release under the name The Nation of Wenonah was released on What Else? records out of Indiana as a split EP with band Lynrd's Innards. The EP was a send-up/tribute of the Washington D.C. band the Nation of Ulysses. As more new songs were written the style of the band was veering towards the agitpop styles of other D.C. bands from the early 1990's and Richie and Dave found themselves less than enthusiastic about the direction the band was headed.

Time was booked into Andy Ernst's Art of Ears studio, where "J.D. Salinger" had been recorded to do an EP for Lookout!, but before the band entered the studio they suffered something of a meltdown and broke up onstage at 924 Gilman St. in Berkeley, ironically while performing as the opening band for another Lookout! band, Fifteen's farewell show.

Skip and Joe formed the band "Toyboat" with former Red # and Hi-Fives drummer Julie Rose and bassist Adam Turk, E.C. joined the band "Three Years Down", and Richie went to work at a bakery. A short year later toyboat would disband and Joe Selby would join Three Years Down as their bass player with Skip moving to New York to pursue a career in information technology.

during the mid to late 90s i spent most of my time (when i wasn't traveling) in northern california. in davis, california, to be precise. i had a radio show at community free-form alternative radio KDVS, as well as helping run Food Not Bombs with my pal Punk Roge, and a little side-job washing dishes for some spending cash. after Food Not Bombs, sunday afternoons were usually spent poring over records and tapes at any of the local thrift stores. it was one of these such sunday afternoons that i plucked this cassette out of the sea of cheeseball hair metal and corny new wave offerings that were usually par for the course. i was already familiar with the band, having had a copy of their only vinyl outing, the hard up EP, which i may be their only other output, period. someone please correct me if i'm wrong!! i would surely like to hear more. every song here is pretty much a winner, topics range from rootbeer (LESS FILLING, TASTES GREAT!), skateboarding, cops, girls, insecurities, etc. basically anthems for being punk and young. think bay area hardcore meets RKL...

no matter which side of the faith/void split you prefer, you'll agree that it's arguably the best split release in the history of hardcore. the void songs were so ballistic and out of control, they teetered on the edge of losing it completely. so far out of bounds, that few bands have come close to achieving the same type of loose ferocity.

We are sad to announce that Sean Finnegan, the drummer from Void and an original member of the Dischord family, passed away on Wednesday January 30th of an apparent heart attack, he was 43. Sean's family will receive friends Monday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. at HARRY H. WITZKE'S FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, INC., 4112 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, Maryland. Sean played in Void while they we're active from 1980-1983 and was recently working on the set of the HBO production, "The Wire". An obituary and guest book can be found in the Baltimore Sun. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Sean's many friends and family members.

In lieu of flowers Sean's family ask that donations may be made to the Fisher House, Walter Reed Hospital , Washington, D.C.

our friends at lo-res viscera recently posted void's long-lost/unreleased 3rd album "potion for bad dreams." in this (un)release, void was evolving from the breakneck thrash of their earlier material, slowing it down and adding the metal chops. while most hardcore purists could probably have done without hearing it, i certainly enjoy listening to it for what it is and it still can probably bulldoze much of the metal albums recorded during the same time frame.

good music for bad, bad times! has the Condensed Flesh 7"EP, which was a vinyl press of the 1981 void demo tape.

the (scottish) freeze

sure, the boston freeze rank up there with some of the best american hardcore, but lately i've been giving the scottish freeze repeated listens. the haunting ballad "psychodalek nightmare" lurches along oozing proto-punk, even with its well-suited use of violin. this is the song that sucked me in, and really brings to mind the mike rep and the quota's anthem "heavy metal has destroyed my mind."

the video is a little disappointing in the fact that it's just a slideshow of cover art and a promo shot, and that's it, aside from a little bit of lineup and record infos.

The Freeze were formed in 1976 by Gordon Sharp, David Clancy and Keith Grant, all pupils together at school in Linlithgow, West Lothian. By 1977 and after linking up with drummer Graeme Radin, the band started gigging around Scotland, often playing support to many of the main punk and new wave bands of the day.
On Feb 24th 1978 they participated in the Stiff/Chiswick challenge series -- designed to highlight the U.K.'s top, unsigned acts at Edinburgh's Clouds Disco. Among those performing were The Skids, The Subs, The Monos, The Cuban Heels, Groper, The Freeze, and The Scars.

Two 7inch's were released on the A1 label, 1979's In Colour EP followed by 1980's Celebration/Crossover single.

Best moments-2:After being stopped by police on the way home from a gig where they got very excited about a substance in Roys pocket to get it returned 4 weeks later with a note to say it was violin resin, a fact that we had told the police at the time of our arrest!

human sufferage were apparently one of the most notable offerings to the midwest/ohio hardcore scene, columbus, ohio to be exact. i say that with a certain sense of pride, having lived here for the past 6 years. during that time, i've only uncovered a few clues to the pre-1990s history of hardcore in this town. i've run into another internet black hole trying to ferret out information on this band. the sound is not unlike their midwest contemporaries, negative approach, but not quite as extreme. i've not heard the first LP, but this is a pretty solid release, if not a little generic in the best way possible. copies of this record turn up at the local shops from time to time for only a few bucks, though i've seen it fetch near $50 elsewhere.

HUMAN SUFFERAGE - "Thank You, Mother Dear" 12"
The production on these acidic thrash compositions is
extremely basic, as on their debut LP, but HUMAN SUFFERAGE
earn high marks for improved songwriting and a sense of
passion that's almost tangiable . "Take It for Granted" is a
snappy hardcore number worth special mention, but the lyrics
on all these songs show that this band is extremely articulate,
too . A must-get . (SS)

to fill a request from dr. punkenstain, i am posting this fabulous three volume compilation of "killed by death style" rare or otherwise obscure scottish DIY punk.

The next wad who walks up to me in public and hands me a CD-R of their current post-rock/indie-experimental/improv/hip ‘noise' project with the immortal words “it's happening on your own doorstep!” is gonna have to eat fist. The fact is that there has never been any real history of experimental music in Scotland and outside of the activities of a few scattered individuals that unfortunately remains pretty much the case today. What Scotland has always enjoyed is a fairly voluble DIY/underground rock scene, a scene that - despite the geographical distance - always seemed to have more in common with what was happening beneath the pavements of New York than anything that the media/fashion dictates of London might've encouraged. Kilt By Death, then, is a timely round-up of some of the best - and some of the most unlikely - DIY/punk sides to come out of Scotland in the period 1977-1984. Some of the stuff here is pretty common, some of it is faintly ridiculous (Andy Cameron's “I Wanna Be A Punk Rocker”) and some of it (killer sides like Fire Exit's “Time Wall”, previously comped on Volume 7 of the original Killed By Death series) is as rare as a clue in the putty-soft brain of the average Scottish music journalist. Listened to in one sitting it makes a pretty convincing case for Scotland's inclusion alongside New Zealand as one of the most consistently committed DIY outposts and one that drew sustenance and strength - as opposed to bitterness and poodle-peddling compromise - from a position of relative cultural and geographical isolation. Sometimes, you just gotta be reminded. punk record collectors and avid hardcore nerds alike are no stranger to the killed by death series of compilations. these records mostly showcased some of the best (and, admittedly, worst) of the rare, obscure, and/or overlooked punk glut from around the world during the late 70s and early 80s, sending many otherwise casual record collectors into a sweating fury to find original copies. enter the age of the internet and auction sites such as ebay and every band ever featured in the KBD series now fetches ridiculously high prices. while most of these records are well worth owning, they surely are NOT worth what most people are paying for them.

here for your review are KILLED BY DEATH compilations #1 - 10, a good place to start if you're interested in hearing some rare, obscure punk from all corners of the earth, or to re-acquaint yourself if you have "been there, done that" already. this is actually a re-up for an anonymous commenter. normally, i would probably pass on such a large request under the cloak of anonymity, but i do believe this is should be one of those punk rocker's rites of passage. everyone should be exposed to the joys (and in some cases, utter tastelessness or annoyances) of these collections.

on the topic of florida punk, here's some more fodder from the bowels of google to which there is no corresponding information. search engines seem to be scratching their heads on this one. it's a pretty well-done piece for the mid-eighties, a valiant effort chock full o' punk rock spirit and the sketchy skinheads that plagued the scene. snippets of rhythm pigs, skinny puppy, DOA, along with some of the local florida bands, including one of my favourites, belching penguin! enjoy!!
